Saint Francis Allegedly Said

The birds have nests

the foxes holes
but where hath the son

of God to lay his head?

Courting ire, slouching,

the curve of his spine

like a crow’s

There was a day
we held out our thumbs

and my father’s slouch

was like a teenager’s

Like an almost ageless

almost anorexiated

warworn body

He said in Europe
pilgrims are not much better

looked on than the homeless

He said many pilgrims

and I wonder if he meant

soldiers of a kind
as well

were not in fact devout

but merely curious
or otherwise lost
